The Rainger FX Reverb-X is a deeply creative mini digital reverb built around something that should be “wrong” in theory: placing distortion after the reverb. The result is not a traditional reverb pedal, but a machine for burnt atmospheres, huge textures, chopped tails, gated ambience and reverbs that can move from bright and clean to dark, dirty and almost sample-like.

In terms of sonic family, this is not a strict recreation of a classic spring, plate or hall unit. Reverb-X sits closer to the world of experimental FV-1-style digital reverb, but with Rainger FX’s unmistakable twist: mini format, immediate controls, weird-but-useful character, distortion applied only to the reverb signal, an integrated gate and the Igor controller for expressive real-time reverb sends.

The key idea is that your dry signal stays clean and present at all times. The Distn control does not distort your direct guitar; it distorts only the reverb. That means you can keep a clean tone, or use your favorite drives upstream, and then add a layer of gritty, burnt or fully destroyed ambience without turning your core attack into mush.

The Gate is another essential part of the pedal. In its subtler setting it helps keep hum and noise under control; in post-reverb/distortion mode it cuts the reverb tail hard when you stop playing. That opens the door to 80s gated reverb, edited-guitar-sample effects, dramatic stops, musical glitches and the feeling that someone is live-editing the depth of the room.

The included Igor pressure pad turns Reverb-X into a much more performative effect. When Igor is plugged in, the pedal stays dry until you press it; as you apply pressure, your signal is sent into the reverb path. Release Igor and you go back to dry, while the reverb tail decays on its own. Perfect for reverb blooms, ambient bursts, spatial hits and phrases that appear and disappear like a studio send under your foot.
