Death By Audio x Rainger FX Amp Crash – Real 3W amplifier, speaker, microphone and multi-effects

Real 3W amp · Internal 2″ speaker · Built-in microphone · DI/Mic blend · Reverb · Echo · Chorus · External speaker out · Buffered bypass · 9V 300mA

The Death By Audio x Rainger FX Amp Crash is one of those ideas that sounds strange until you understand that there is no amp simulation involved. Inside the pedal is a real 3W amplifier, a real 2″ speaker and a microphone physically capturing what happens inside the enclosure.

The amplifier drives the speaker. The speaker moves air. The microphone captures that movement. You can then blend the direct amplifier signal with the mic’d signal.

That means much of the compression, harmonics, feedback and texture generated by Amp Crash does not come from an algorithm trying to reproduce a tiny amplifier. It is physically happening inside the pedal.

The collaboration began with an idea from David Rainger: place a microphone inside a pedal so ambient sound could interact with the guitar signal. When Death By Audio added a small speaker to the concept, the interaction between amplifier, speaker and microphone became considerably more interesting. Amp Crash grew from there.

The Gain control sets the gain of the internal amplifier. At moderate levels it can deliver touch-sensitive breakup and overdrive. Push it toward Overload and the circuit moves into aggressive distortion, fuzz, oscillation and increasingly unpredictable behavior.

Tone shapes the little amplifier itself, moving from deep, bass-heavy sounds to brighter and more focused tones.

Then there are the DI Out and Mic Out controls. DI Out sets the level of the direct amplifier signal, while Mic Out controls how much of the physically captured microphone signal reaches the output. Blending the two can move from relatively defined amplifier tones to raw, compressed textures that feel much closer to a tiny combo being abused.

The microphone also has a Mic Gate. When engaged, a noise gate acts on the internal microphone signal and uses the instrument input as its trigger.

Amp Crash also includes three digital effects: Reverb, Echo and Chorus. They are not there to turn the unit into a conventional multi-effect. Instead, they extend the amplifier, speaker and microphone concept into even stranger territory.

Reverb ranges from a small room to a huge cave. Echo has a classic tape-style character. Chorus moves from spacious modulation into metallic flanging territory.

Depth and Time change function depending on the selected SFX mode. With Depth fully down, the effects section is bypassed.

You can also connect an external speaker cabinet rated at 8Ω or higher and at least 3W. Doing so automatically disables the internal speaker and effectively turns Amp Crash into a real compact 3W amplifier head. The main output can still provide the DI/Mic blend for recording or additional processing.

A dummy cable in the External Speaker output can also disable the internal speaker while leaving the DI and microphone paths active. This makes it possible to use Amp Crash more like a conventional pedal inside a rig.

It is not quite an overdrive, fuzz, amp simulator or combo amplifier. It can behave like all of those things, but its character comes from something much simpler: an amplifier, a speaker and a microphone locked inside the same box and pushed too far.

Controls

  • Gain: sets internal amplifier gain. Overload produces extreme distortion and oscillation
  • Tone: shapes the amp from deep and bass-heavy to bright and focused
  • DI Out: sets the direct amplifier level sent to the output
  • Mic Out: sets the internal microphone level
  • Mic Gate: enables the microphone noise gate
  • SFX Selector: chooses Reverb, Echo or Chorus
  • Depth:
    • Reverb: effect blend
    • Echo: blend and feedback
    • Chorus: modulation depth
  • Time:
    • Reverb: decay
    • Echo: delay time
    • Chorus: rate
  • Power Footswitch: engages/bypasses the unit and switches the internal speaker on or off

Reverb, Echo and Chorus

Reverb:

  • Ranges from small-room ambience to huge cave sounds
  • Time controls decay

Chorus:

  • Rich three-dimensional modulation
  • Extends into metallic flanging textures
  • Time controls speed
  • Depth controls intensity

Connections

  • Input: instrument input
  • Output: sends the combined DI Out and Mic Out signals when engaged
  • External Speaker: for cabinets rated at 8Ω minimum
