The Alexander Pedals Velvet Noise is a stereo widener designed to make your signal feel bigger, deeper and more three-dimensional without relying on the usual phase shifting, micro-delay or aggressive frequency-manipulation tricks.

At its core is a technique called velvet-noise decorrelation. Instead of treating the left and right channels as one image that is simply stretched apart, it introduces carefully controlled differences between them, inspired by the way real acoustic spaces naturally scatter sound.

The result is a wider stereo image with a solid center, strong mono compatibility and far less of the phasey or comb-filtered character that can appear with conventional stereo widening methods.

One of its most useful applications is taking a mono signal and opening it into stereo, making Velvet Noise ideal at the end of a mono pedalboard before feeding two amplifiers, a stereo interface, modeler or FRFR system.

Operation could hardly be simpler: one control determines the amount of widening. Fully counterclockwise leaves your original signal untouched. As you turn it clockwise, the decorrelated signal is progressively blended in. At maximum settings, subtle modulation is introduced for even more dramatic stereo separation.

In terms of sonic family, Velvet Noise is not really a chorus, doubler or delay. It is closer to a piece of studio spatial processing translated into pedal format, designed to widen guitars, basses, synths, drum machines or complete effect chains without necessarily sounding like an obvious “effect.”

A discrete JFET input preamp and tailored low-noise analog section help keep the signal clean and consistent, while TRS connectivity allows both mono and stereo operation.

Important: the widening effect requires a stereo playback or amplification system. The pedal will pass signal in mono, but the spatial widening itself will not be audible.
